Lavender Oil Recipes

These are two lavender oil recipes from Suzette Caplin, the Young Living Lavender Farm marketing and PR director. She was interviewed by Utah's KSL TV Studio 5 and shared these two recipes for lavender lemonade and lavender vinaigrette salad dressing. Both of these recipes use lavender oil.

Lavender Lemonade

Ingredients

  • juice of 7 lemons and 2 limes
  • 14 cups of water
  • 1 1/2 cups blue agave
  • 1 drop of lavender essential oil

Mix the juice of the lemons and limes, the water and the blue agave together. Add the lavender oil, chill and serve.

Note: Suzette recommends that if you're not used to the flavour of lavender, to start with just the tip of a toothpick dipped in the oil. She also recommends that when you do add a drop, to pour it out of the bottle over a spoon to make sure you don't put too much in. Watch the interview on YouTube.

Lavender Vinaigrette Salad Dressing

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp. dried culinary lavender buds, ground finely in a spice grinder

Whisk these four ingredients together, pour on your salad and toss lightly.

You only need a little of the lavender oil , a little goes a long way. It has a subtle flavour that enhances the taste of anything you use it in. Try it!

And to show you a bit of the variety of foods that you can use lavender in, here are a couple of recipes from wikia.com .1

Lavender Cheesecake2

Ingredients

Crust

  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp melted margarine or butter

Filling

  • 4 x 8 oz bricks of cream cheese at room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp vanilla
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 3 1/2 tsp. ground culinary lavender

(Note: make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Prepare the crust by mixing graham wafer crumbs, sugar and melted margarine or butter together and patting into a 9 inch spring form pan.

Prepare the filling by beating cream cheese, sugar, flour and vanilla at medium speed until blended.

Add eggs one at a time until mixed. Blend one at a time until mixed.

Blend in sour cream, lavender and vanilla and pour into crust.

Place in oven on rack placed in middle of oven.

Place a pan filled with water on a rack below the rack with the cheesecake and bake for 1 hour 10 minutes.

When done, turn off oven and open door to let the cake cool to room temperature.

Refrigerate overnight and add a topping of your choice before serving.

Lavender Cookies3

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter or margarine, room temperature
  • 1 cup superfine sugar
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 gtsp. lavender buds
  • 2 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

In a large bowl, cream the butter, sugar and salt until fluffy

Add the beaten eggs and vanilla and mix well.

Add in the flour and mix on low speed just until the dough is coming together

Sprinkle in the lavender buds and fold in gently (don't overmix).

Divide the dough into two mounds and wrap up well in plastic. Chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

Sprinkle flour on your work surface and unwrap the dough. Take half of it out and wrap up the other half to keep chilled in the fridge while you work. (this is to use as little flour as possible so that the cookies will be softer). Roll out the dough with a floured rolling pin, taking care not to overwork or overstretch the tender dough.

Cut out shapes of hearts, full moons, stars and crescents. Carefully move the cookie shapes to nonstick cookie sheets, placing them 1/2 inch apart, fitting as many as possible on each sheet. Bake, two sheets at a time, until the cookies are golden brown, about 6–8 minutes. Use a thin spatula to move the hot cookies to a rack to cool.

Store in an airtight container when cool.

Makes about 3 dozen.

I hope you enjoy this little selection of recipes. Lavender oil can also be used in cooking, adding to roasts or vegetables. Your imagination is your only limit!
